Indigo Dyeing
in Sanxia

What is Indigo Dyeing?

Shibori is a Japanese word for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern. Fabric is folded, twisted, pleated or bound — then dipped in natural indigo dye. Only the unbound areas absorb the color, creating unique patterns.

History of Sanxia

1820s
Immigrants from Anxi bring indigo plants to Sanxia. The Old Street becomes a dyeing hub.
1896
Industrial chemical dyes from Germany devastate the traditional craft. Most workshops close.
1996
San Chiao Yung Culture Association founded. Community revival begins.
2024
Sanxia artisans exhibit at Paris MAISON & OBJET. Global recognition begins.
